Powerhouse is the only word that accurately describes London-based producer and director Yasser Abubeker.
Abubeker creates both profoundly personal and vibrant music videos for artists such as Ms Carrie Stacks, Kelela and Shygirl. Drama and adrenaline flows through all his work. For Stacks’ 2020 single “Runnin”, Abubeker created a montage of running scenes in a series of eerie settings, capturing Stacks’ striking physicality.
In 2022, after a four-year hiatus filled with mystery and speculation, singer Kelela emerged with her single “Washed Away”, featuring a video directed by Abubeker. Filmed in the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia’s northern Afar region, Abubeker made stunning use of the desert setting and intense sunlight. No matter the vibe, his videos leave you feeling high and wanting more.
Now, he is able to create these surrealist worlds on his own terms. In August, Abubeker launched YMI Studio, his very own creative production company, producing videos and stills through his effervescent lens for The New York Times, i-D and Harper’s Bazaar.
