For any musician who came up in the pandemic, the transition to IRL fame can be particularly dizzying – and no one knows this better than CLIP. The 23-year-old has gained a dedicated following for her terminally online take on sad girl rap, with viral hits such as “Sad B!tch” amassing over four million hits on Spotify. Recognised for her untouchably hot girl aesthetic and buzzy social media presence, the rapper ran away from home aged 16 to New York, where she found a home in the city’s sceness, including former digicore artists angelus and midwxst with which she formed the collective Burn All Sex Dolls.
Her debut EP Perception, released earlier this year, features a selection of nine tracks that combine emotionally turbulent lyrics with a dismissive delivery and coolly monotone vocals. It saw CLIP embrace her complex emotions, with tracks like “Hurt U” and “Villain” depicting honest portrayals of the artist’s shortcomings. Since then, she’s featured on Coucou Chloe’s 1 EP with a remix of the track “ZERO FIVE STARS” and starred in a Marc Jacobs Heaven campaign, signalling the perfect recipe for an IT girl in the making.
