We hit the factory for a film about the material being created for humans to look fly in the future

In a small factory in the east of England, the future of leather is being created. Billed by Nike as “the greatest advance in leather, since leather”, the material known as Flyleather is an innovation designed in a bid make sneaker culture sustainable, and reduce the carbon footprint that comes with looking fly.

Flyleather feels like leather, smells like leather, and behaves like leather, and Nike has already rolled out versions of classic styles (e.g the Cortez) using the material. A sign of the brand’s commitment to making global industry change, today on May 16 at Copenhagen Fashion Summit it’s releasing a resource of sustainable guidelines for all designers in the industry. Circularity: Guiding The Future Of Design (download here) is a set of ten principles that aims to encourage the making of products that last longer and are created with the planet in mind.

This film The Future Of Leather is a hypnotising walk-through of how Flyleather is made, a trippy ASMR-inspired visual that takes the viewer through the process. We live in an era of sneaker obsession, and a responsibility to think about the impact our fashion habits are having on the planet. Here’s how Nike is stepping forward into the future.
