How to recreate Euphoria’s best make-up looks after its big Emmy win

The hit TV series’ make-up department has bagged a well-deserved Emmy win – from Jules’ spikey eyes to Maddie’s gold chain cut crease, here’s how you can DIY Euphoria’s beauty moments

The make-up looks of Euphoria were a veritable visual feast for the beauty enthusiast’s eyes, and truly captured and defined this generation’s aesthetic. From sky blue eyelids with chainmail applique and rhinestone-studded eyebrows, to geometric face stickers and glitter tears, the HBO show’s make-up was colourful, bejewelled, and over-the-top in the best way – a much needed tonic for the bleak political and environmental climates of 2019. Drawing on influences ranging from VSCO and E-girls on TikTok to Nina Simone, make-up artist Doniella Davy created cohesive, distinctive visual identities for each character whether that was Jules’s (Hunter Schafer) colourful, whimsical lid designs or Kat’s (Barbie Ferreira) dominatrix-infused makeover.

Euphoria reflected and set the trends of Instagram glam in real-time and created a rippled effect through the wider fashion industry particularly the SS20 season where the Maddie, Jules, Cassie, and Rue looks were in full effect. It’s hard to remember the last time a television programme had as big a cultural impact on beauty as the first season of Euphoria had and now the make-up artists behind the looks are getting their due. Last night, Euphoria won an Emmy award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup with department head Davy as well as Kristen Sage Colemand and Tara Lang Shah all included in the nod.

To celebrate the extremely well-deserved win, we’ve gone back through the beauty archives to rank the best looks from the show and to help you get the looks at home. And although the much anticipated season two has had to halt production in the midst of lockdown, we can still fantasise about what exquisite, otherworldly looks Davy has in store for us. Alexia Demie certainly knows what she wants for Maddy next season, telling Dazed Beauty last year, “I’m excited to push it and go for maybe some darker colours and experiment more with shapes.”
